This birth was a serious long haul. Everyone says "thirds" are different and unpredictable, and this little guy lived up to the "third" stereotype. I got a text from the mom at 4:00 am letting me know labour had started. They went to the hospital early in full labour which soon slowed down once they arrived. I went to visit them in the hospital at 8 am to grab a few photos. She was trying everything to speed things up (long walks in the hall, sitting on the ball, etc) but after a couple hours of slow labour I left them to carry on. I thought I would return to the hospital a few hours later, little did I know I wouldn't be returning until 8pm that evening. In those 12 hours, they had many uphill and downhill rides. Yes... labour is hard. I'm so glad it wasn't me. It's so much harder to be behind the lens now that I share so much empathy for the mothers. However, as women somehow persevere, my dear friend triumphantly birthed a beautiful (and large) baby boy. I hopped in the room as soon as he was born to grab these precious first 2 hours of life.
