I was recently contacted by a journalist at CBC for an article she was writing on birth photography. After all it's been a recent topic in NY Times, Good Morning America, the Today Show and more. Everywhere it has gotten very positive coverage and the media outlets have portrayed it as a beautiful new genre of photography, however the CBC article was a bit leery of it and hence I'm not pasting the whole article on my blog... if you care to read about some sceptical comments from an American Doctor interviewed, you can read the full article here, but let me tell you, the writer ends the article quoting the doctor saying she's sure her 18 year old son is glad he doesn't have a photo in the house of him coming out of his mom's ....
Well in rebuttal, I usually don't take crowning shots, and if I do it's 1 photo out of 200 that can be easily deleted if you don't want to keep record of it. As for the other 199 photos, they make a beautiful narrative of the day that life came into the world. My clients say their siblings (when older) LOVE looking at their birth books. They point to photos and say "that's when you found out I was a boy... right!" And who's to say an 18 year old wouldn't also love looking at the bonded love of his 2 parents the day he was born. As for the comments that follow the article, I'm sure they were made by many ill-informed people that haven't seen my tasteful and beautiful birth stories. Read below for what she chose to write from our interview.
