The only thing certain about birth is its uncertainty. Knowing this, every doula still wants their mothers to have a birth plan so that she can think out her options and prepare (as much as possible) for any number of scenarios. Every woman desires her birth to happen a certain way and even when something goes wrong she has the right to chose her coarse of action.
When I met Shawn and Sarah (names changed to protect privacy), they told me their story and birth plan. He had been born at home on an army base, and she was excited to try natural childbirth with her family doctor at the hospital. We talked about her options and prepared for labour without drugs and hoped to avoid interventions. However, when things didn't go as planned, THEY chose to take their doctors advice and have a cesarean. As their doula, I supported their choice because prior to the birth I knew they had studied their options. Cesarean might not have been their first choice, but being educated on the procedure helped them feel confident during and after the birth. Here's some precious photos of their new son Liam.
