When my friend Kyla asked me to photograph her second birth, I was obviously thrilled. I had been there for her first, and I thought it would be similar... but a few bends in the road took her out to Royal Columbian to be induced at 38 weeks.
(Some Context:) She is also a photographer and blessed me with my beautiful birth photos 11 months ago. She came to my house at 2 in the morning and quietly captured everything on camera. Fear. Relief. Joy. She witnessed my birth, travelled a bit of my journey with me. Hence, being back in her birth room second time around wasn't at all like the first time nearly 2 years ago. This time, I knew the pain she felt. I wanted to burst out in tears and crumble behind her strength. I was there the entire day (since I didn't want to miss the birth by leaving Abbotsford too late) and watching the entire journey was incredibly inspiring. Kyla: I was so honoured to be invited into your birth room. I was so appreciative of the gift you gave our family during Huxley's birth and am finally so happy to repay that gift back to you again! Since there are way too many great photos to blog: Check out her SLIDESHOW here!

I love your birth photos. Would you mind sharing with me what lens you are using? Is a prime lens like my 50mm 1.4 ok or do you use a zoom? i'm not a professional - just preparing to record the birth of my next grandchild :)

Susan, thanks for you comment! I shoot with a Nikon, so I use a 35mm lens. If you shoot with a full frame Canon camera, than the equivalent lens is 50mm. If your camera is not full frame, than I find a 50 mm lens is a bit close for hospital births, however perfect for home births since you generally have a bit more room to move around. If you have any other questions feel free to email me at [email protected]
