Glance over that cereal bar or cracker. Do you know all the ingredients? If not, then you probably shouldn't buy them again. In fact, you should always ingredient check when shopping, because monosodium glutamate and other harmful ingredients sneak into a lot of products. I just checked a Cheerios box and was surprised to find trisodium posphate (TSP), an ingredient used as a cleaner/ degreaser. Yes, our bodies are resilient and can process a lot of toxins, but we still don't want to add to the accumulating list.
So I want to suggest a few alternatives:
- Fresh is best! If you can make time to cut up some fruit and vegis and put it in the fridge for the next couple days, that's ideal.
- If you need a quick fix, then have healthy snacks on hand. Keep in mind when food is processed it loses quality and nutrients, but their are some better choices. As rule of thumb, I believe the less ingredients the better. If you are local, go over to SilverHills Bakery Outlet and pick up a new cereal product (in the shape of an "O") they are promoting. It's $1 for a bag and each variety only has 2 ingredients. I picked up kamut and sea salt, and lentil and sea salt and was pleasantly surprised! (These O's can also double as a healthy snack for mom!)
- Talk to other moms and find out what their healthy solution is.
