Calm. Peaceful. Controlled. Inspiring. These are the words I have chosen to describe my sister's birth... a beautiful home/ water-birth. On the night of our first snow storm of the season, we made the trek through the cold blustery weather to arrive at a dimly lit, quiet house where my sister was already deep in labour. She did her best to relax with each contraction, but as soon as she was able to immerse herself in the tub she couldn't help but relax. 45 minutes she spent in the tub quietly leaning into her husband, and then with all of her saved up efforts, she pushed out her beautiful 9.5 pound baby. To make things more interesting, her "water" didn't fully break so her baby was born with the sack of waters wrapped around it. It wasn't until the sack slid down and off the baby that we discovered it was in fact a boy! The ultimate "water baby." Two midwifes were present and we were all the most privileged of spectators, just standing by in case she needed us, but barely lifting a finger to help in her labouring and birthing process. Her 3 year old son woke up (at 4 am) right after his baby brother arrived. He got to share in the excitement of meeting his new brother the same time that we all met him. Her family of (now) 4 crawled into their clean and cozy bed to rest and get to know their new addition. I would go so far as to say it was a perfect birth... until the power went off at 5am :) To see more of her birth photos click here. To see more of her birth photos click here.
